What is Faux Painting?

Faux painting is a term for decorative painting techniques that can replicate the look of materials like wood grain, leather, tile, etc on walls or furniture. The name is derived from the French word "faux" which means fake. It is a quick and inexpensive way to add instant pizzazz to any residential or commercial interior.

Do you love the look of marble floors, but just can't fit it in the budget? Do you want the appearance of wood panels on your walls without the worry of damaging your walls should you decide to remove it? Faux painting combines skilled artistry and imagination to give your interior design unlimited options with just a few coats of paint.

Here are just a few ideas of the many things you can accomplish with this unique painting technique and a little creativity:

• Faux wood paneling
  Materials needed: paintbrushes, glaze, enamel paint, and a graining tool
• Duplicate the look of suede
  Materials needed: textured paint roller, varnish, and suede paint
• Stone textured walls
  Materials needed: Aquastone® stone plaster finish (this is a product made specifically for painting textured stone, made up of a marble dust and plaster mixture), several tints of 100% acrylic paint, an acrylic basecoat, drywall blade, and a cotton rag
• Faux tile backsplash for your kitchen or bathroom
  Materials needed: a paintbrush, tinted primer, several coordinating colors of paint, painters tape, and auto detailing tape to mark off the tile pattern
• Add a marble look to walls, floors, or furniture
  Materials needed: several paintbrushes, foam roller, a sea sponge, four coordinating colors for painting the faux marble, latex glaze, and varnish
• Give old furniture a faux leather finish
  Materials needed: painter's tape, varnish, brown paint, foam brushes, glaze, and a large stippling brush

This is just a small sampling of the many things you can do with creative painting techniques. As you can see, the materials to achieve the desire results are minimal and fairly inexpensive. Painting is a great way to dress up a room quickly without breaking the budget.

Many of these painting techniques are easy for an ambitious do-it-yourself painter to accomplish in a weekend. To get the best results however, we recommend using a seasoned painter with experience in faux painting or trompe l'oeil and enlisting the help of an interior designer to advise which technique will fit best with the overall design you wish to achieve.
